Connect the power cord to the back of the console to the 3-prong slot marked AC IN and then into the electrical outlet or surge protector. Flip the main power switch, located just above the power cord on the back of the console, to the "on" position.

Step 1: Set console near television and power outlet Place the console near the television where a power outlet is easily accessible. TIP: To protect your electrical equipment, use a surge protector. The system includes a Wi-Fi adapter, so if you have a Wi-Fi router, you can skip this step unless you prefer the guaranteed stability of a wired connection. Plug your controller into a USB port on the front of the system for the first couple hours of use, until the battery charges.

A console can have multiple accounts, so everyone in your household can make have separate friend lists and trophy collections. To set up the Internet connection, first turn off all modems or routers for two full minutes and then turn back on. Choose Easy and pick either Wired or Wireless. For wireless, choose Scan to find your Wi-Fi router. Enter its Security Setting and Network Key password.
Once online, your console may find and install an update. You can skip updating if you are anxious to play, but you need the latest system version to play online or use the PlayStation Network. Online features require a free PlayStation Network account.
Choose Create a New Account , unless you already have an account from another system. Fill in your information -- country, language, birth date and email address -- and create a password and security question.
Choose a unique user ID, which might not match the account name picked earlier if it's already in use.
