Interest is primarily in the manufactured or fabricated product, including materials selection, manufacturing methods, tooling, operator training, quality control, performance evaluation, sales, and service. The broad range of welded products with which welding engineers deal includes structures, such as bridges and buildings; pressure vessels and heat exchangers, such as nuclear systems, boilers, chemical processing equipment, storage vessels, and transmission and distribution piping; transportation vehicles for water, land, air, and space travel; and production and processing machines of all types.

This is an ABET-accredited program. While most may think of welding in terms of a process, it is actually a complex engineering discipline that involves aspects of materials science, design, inspection, mechanical and electronic systems, lasers, and robots.

Students interested in pursuing a bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering will begin as "pre-majors" in WE, and should follow the curriculum sheet, taking the required courses in Math, Chemistry, Physics, and Engineering.
