He's fast, hard to kill, casts spells, and resurrects dead monsters! At least these suckers are rare. The Spider Mastermind: You guess the Arachnotrons had to come from somewhere. Hi, Mom. She doesn't have a plasma gun, so thank heaven for small favors. Instead, she has a super- chaingun. The Cyberdemon: A missile-launching skyscraper with goat legs.

Command Keys This is a list of the key commands that cannot be changed in the Configuration dialog. So it is best to find a safe place before adjusting screen sizes or sounds.

Make sure it's OK with your buddies before taking a breather. SAVE: When you do a save game during a network game, it saves on every player's system in the save game slot you select, writing over whatever was there. Before saving the game, players should agree on a safe slot to save in.

LOAD: You cannot load a saved game while playing a multi-player game. To load a game everyone must quit from the current game and restart the game from the saved game, which is specified using the Launcher. Even though you've died, other players have survived. We didn't want to undo all of their fine destruction by reviving every monster in the area. However, this also means the level will eventually run dry of monsters and ammunition.

You'll have to decide when the level is played out. The color of your character is the color behind your face on the status bar. To enter into Chat mode and broadcast a message to all the players, press the letter 'T'. A cursor will appear where your messaging is normally placed. To broadcast to a specific player, instead of pressing 'T' you'll need to press the first letter of the player's color.

In DeathMatch mode the intermission provides a death count on everyone, letting you know who killed whom.

Any player can exit an area and force all of the players to move to the next area. Also, there is no limit on how many kills are required to declare a player the winner.

Radio contact soon ceases and the player realizes that he is the only survivor. Being unable to pilot the shuttle off of Phobos by himself, the only way to escape is to go inside and fight through the complexes of the moon base.

Doom is a first-person shooter with a background setting that mixes science fiction and horror of the weird menace style , presented in the form of three episodes, each taking place in a separate general location and played separately. The primary objective of each level is simply to locate the exit room that leads to the next area invitingly labeled with a red EXIT sign , while surviving all hazards along the way.

Among the obstacles are monsters, pits of radioactive waste , ceilings that descend to crush the player, and locked doors for which a key or remote switch need to be located. The levels are sometimes labyrinthine the automap is a crucial aid in navigating them , and feature plenty of hidden rooms that hold powerups as a reward for players who explore thoroughly.

A tally screen at the end of each level except the last of each episode, which describes part of the plot helps players aiming for additional objectives, such as clearing the levels of monsters or finding secret areas. Doom's weapon arsenal was highly distinctive in and eventually became prototypical for first-person shooters. The monsters generally exhibit very simple AI , and thus most cases must outnumber the player to triumph although great numbers can sometimes prove counterproductive due to monster infighting. Aside from the single-player game mode, Doom features two multiplayer modes usable over a network : co-operative mode, in which two to four players team up against the legions of hell, and deathmatch mode, in which the same number of players fight each other.

The first-episode shareware format of the initial release offered a substantial and freely playable taste of the game, which could be distributed with ease on floppy disks , over the Internet, and in CD-ROM packages, thus encouraging players and retailers to spread Doom as widely as possible. Special attention is provided to starting a new game, saving and loading, and, continuing on to page 4, details on the "Read This!

Page 6 is called "Controlling the Action" and explains the default setup of the keyboard, mouse, and joystick, though the joystick instructions assume the Gravis PC Gamepad is in use, and do not go into detail about how the controls can be customized.

Continuing onto page 7, information is given about picking up items , using doors and keys , lifts , finding secrets behind hidden doors, and what to expect from teleporters. Each weapon in the game is illustrated and explained, followed by information on how to aim and shoot, and the types and qualities of the various ammo objects are also shown and detailed.

Page 9 explains the various commands available via function and other keyboard keys and is entitled "Commands and Shortcuts. Page 10 is entitled "Dangerous Doom Environment," and explains environmental hazards. The exploding barrel is paid special attention, nukage and other forms of slime get a section of their own, and the existence of crushing ceilings is revealed.

This page also begins the "Health and Armor" section, continuing onto page 11, which explains medikits and stimpacks and the basic types of armor in the game.
